Urge Rep. Garamendi to Co-sponsor Medicare for All

Hi, my name is ____ and I’m calling from [city], my zipcode is ____, and I’m a member of Indivisible Yolo. I’m calling to urge the Representative to co-sponsor Rep. Jayapal’s proposed Medicare for All plan, HR 1384. I know that the Representative has been a supporter of almost every Medicare for All bill that’s been introduced in the House, and I would like him to support this one, as well.

Tell Senator Dodd to protect Californians from Police Violence

My name is ____ and I’m calling from ____; my zip code is ____. I’m a member of Indivisible.

I am calling to urge the Senator to vote NO on SB 230. This bill, sponsored by law enforcement, pretends to address the problem of unnecessary killings by police, but does nothing to address accountability, transparency, or consequences for these use-of-force decisions.

Dodd is one of the authors of the bill that would simply require officers to attend occasional additional training. This bill would not address or create real accountability within police departments – it does not create oversight, does not require transparency, and does not address a system of discipline or review in cases of police violence – it merely require police officers to attend another class.

This bill has been introduced with the backing of police officers, as an alternative to AB 392, which actually addresses the above questions in relation to police violence and use-of-force policies and procedures.

Urge Assemblymember Aguiar-Curry to Support the California Act to Save Lives

My name is ___ and I’m calling from ____; my zip code is ____. I’m a member of Indivisible.

I’d like to urge the assemblymember to support AB 392 to change California’s policy for police use of deadly force. Too many people, mostly young men of color, are killed at the hands of police every single year with absolutely no justice due to our weak standard for use of force. This needs to end. Can I count on her to publicly support AB 392?

This bill addresses deadly use-of-force policy and states: “under existing law, a homicide committed by a peace officer is justifiable when necessarily committed in arresting a person who has committed a felony and the person is fleeing or resisting such arrest.
Existing case law deems such a homicide to be a seizure under the Fourth Amendment of the Constitution of the United States, and as such, requires the actions to be reasonable.
This bill would redefine the circumstances under which a homicide by a peace officer is deemed justifiable to include when the killing is in self-defense or the defense of another, consistent with the existing legal standard for self-defense, or when the killing is necessary to prevent the escape of a fleeing felon whose immediate apprehension is necessary to prevent death or serious injury. The bill would additionally bar the use of this defense if the peace officer acted in a criminally negligent manner that caused the death, including if the officer’s criminally negligent actions created the necessity for the use of deadly force.
The bill would also affirmatively prescribe the circumstances under which a peace officer is authorized to use deadly force to effect an arrest, to prevent escape or to overcome resistance.”

Thank Rep. Garamendi for Co-Sponsoring HR 6 – The Dream and Promise Act

I’m calling from ______, zip code _____ to thank Rep. Garamendi for cosponsoring and supporting H.R. 6 – “The Dream and Promise Act of 2019.”

More info

H.R. 6 provides permanent protection and a path to citizenship to 2.5 million immigrants, including Dreamers, people with Temporary Protected Status (TPS) and Deferred Enforced Departure (DED), and it does it without punitive trade-offs, like cutting family immigration, border wall funding or new enforcement policies.

MIRA Executive Director Eva A. Millona states: “The Dream and Promise Act is a breath of fresh air. It sends a strong message to Dreamers and TPS and DED holders: We know this is your home. We know how much you contribute to this nation – and we stand behind you.”
